According to reports, former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani promised to fight until death, but fled Kabul when the Taliban came and captured the capital city, as per reports. Blinken was recently asked by CBS News if he had personally tried to persuade Ghani to stay in Kabul.

On Saturday night (August 14), the Secretary of State said he was on the phone with Ghani, pleading with him to accept a plan for transferring power to a new government in Kabul. "The Taliban would have led this government, but it would have included all aspects of Afghan society," he said.

"He was prepared to do that," Ghani told Blinken, "but if the Taliban wouldn't go along, he was ready to fight to the death." "The next day, he flew out of Afghanistan." On August 15, as Ghani flew out of Afghanistan, the Taliban captured Kabul. "As a result, I was engaged with President Ghani for many weeks, months," Blinken explained.

When the media asked if he did everything he could, the top US diplomat said the State Department was reviewing everything Washington did starting in 2020, when former President Donald Trump's administration agreed to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan. He said the review would include "actions we took during our administration" because "we have to learn every possible lesson from the last few years" as well as the previous 20 years.
