GHMC limits about 16.92 lakh properties, including 13.50 lakh residential structures. Despite the impact of the Kovid-19 epidemic, the Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 573.42 crore in property tax in this financial year under the Early Bird Scheme (EBS). Earlier this year, the state extended the EBS scheme till May 31, taking into account the lockdown.  The Municipal Corporation also collected Rs 248.03 crore under the One Time Scheme (OTS). The state government is offering 90 per cent tax exemption for outstanding interest component on property tax under OTS. Taxpayers can get waiver only if the total property tax arrears are cleared at 10 per cent interest till 2019-20.

GhMC officials said that property tax dues for the past two decades have been estimated at Rs 5.64 lakh with a total of Rs 1,477.86 crore. The interest amount against this is around Rs 1,017.76 crore till the financial year 2019-20. Of the 5.64 lakh property tax assessments identified, 1.10 lakh assessment tax has been paid so far. With the state government extending the deadline for OTS till November 15, civic body officials are expecting more collections. Officials said the extension of OTS would no longer exist and appealed to building owners to take advantage of the opportunity and clear their dues. During this financial year, the Municipal Corporation has focused on increasing collections, but the Kovid-19 has affected the epidemic collections.
