Heavy rain in Telangana state has affected many crops, which will affect its supply. In this queue, Potatoes suddenly became expensive in the city. Potato prices in retail stores in the city have almost doubled and have also increased in the past few days in the farmer's markets. Since selling at retail stores for less than Rs 30 per kilo, consumers now have to shell out anywhere between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kilo potato. Even in the farmers' markets, one kilo of Potato sellers charge Rs.45.
Traders have said that potato prices have been significantly increased due to heavy rains that have caused widespread damage to crops. A trader says that most traders supplying the city have been forced to increase prices in all vegetable markets. According to traders, the current price of Potatoes is the highest in the last few years. "It is not season for Potatoes and we have to rely on other states for supply. The torrential rains lockdown hit the supply of potatoes from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Agra areas,"says J. Shekhar said.
On the other hand, other important vegetables like tomatoes and green chillies have started to fall. One kilo of tomatoes, which were available for Rs 40 a month, are now selling at Rs 20 per kilo in the farmer's bazaars. Similarly, green chillies, which sold more than Rs 50 per kg in October, are now costing Rs 35 per kg, while Lady Fingers, Brinjal and Donda are available for Rs 40, Rs 40 and Rs 35 kg respectively. Meanwhile, onions are available at Rs 54 per kilo in farmer's bazaars. A week ago, the rains had severely damaged onion crops, and they were sold from 80 to 90 rupees per kilo after a supply crunch from Maharashtra and Karnataka.
