GC Murmu takes oath as CAG in presence of President Kovind

New Delhi: India's new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu has assumed charge on Saturday. President Ramnath Kovind has administered him the oath of office and secrecy. Earlier, Murmu paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Bhimrao Ambedkar at the CAG office.

The central government created the new CAG of the country a day after Girish Chandra Murmu resigned as LG of Jammu and Kashmir. Girish Chandra Murmu has replaced Rajiv Maharishi. The Finance Ministry issued a notification on Thursday, stating that Murmu will be sworn in as CAF at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. He resigned from the post of LG of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The tenure of Maharishi, a 1978 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, has ended on August 7. Maharishi was made CAG in the year 2017. His tenure has been three years.

Earlier, Girish Chandra Murmu was appointed the first LG of Jammu and Kashmir to become a union territory. He was made the Lieutenant Governor on October 31, 2019. His tenure was about 9 months. Girish Chandra Murmu, a resident of Sundargarh, Odisha, has an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham. Before becoming the LG of Jammu and Kashmir, Murmu was the Secretary of the Department of Expenditure in the Finance Department.
