New Delhi: The name of the country's first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) can be announced today. Let us know that the new CDS is to take over on December 31. The name of the current Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is at the forefront of the race for this post. After the recent changes made by the Ministry of Defense, these speculations have been further strengthened that Rawat may be the first CDS.

The Modi government officially announced the creation of CDS on 24 December. The CDS will be the Four Star General and will act as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, a new department under the Ministry of Defense and advise the government (political leadership) on military matters. The government has made it clear that CDS will not directly control the command and units of the Army, Air Force, and Navy. But under it, there will be shared command and division of the three parts of the army.

After the government expressed its intention to appoint General Bipin Rawat as the first CDS of India, the Ministry of Defense has changed the tenure and service rules in the Army Rules, 1954. The ministry, in its notification issued on December 28, has said that the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) or the head of Tri-Services will be able to serve till the age of 65 years.
