HYDERABAD: Recently, the central government issued preliminary guidelines to states to identify Covid-19 deaths and consider compensation to bereaved families. Under which, the Telangana state government is soon going to constitute district level committees to identify the deaths of Kovid as per the proposals made by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Earlier in the process of providing assistance to the Covid affected families, NDMA had recommended an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of those battling the virus. The NDMA had proposed that states should provide funds from the State Disaster Management Response Fund. In view of NDMA's proposal, the central government had issued preliminary guidelines to the states, which would eventually be finalized for providing assistance. The state government had earlier constituted a committee to identify the number of Covid deaths, but an effective exercise is needed in view of the NDMA's proposal.

Since the members of the affected families who died of Covid but were not identified as Covid deaths, the NDMA proposed the formation of district-level committees, and approached the authorities, to assist them. According to the records, 3,911 people have died due to Kovid in Telangana so far. District level committees of Additional Collectors, Special Medical Officers and Principals of Medical Colleges will be constituted to identify the non-recorded deaths. Assistance will be provided on the basis of the reports of these committees. The Center had initially directed states to consider deaths that occurred within 30 days of infection. However, the latter suggested considering the deaths even after 30 days.
