New Delhi: The Centre govt introduces a bill in the lower house of Parliament to increase the number of Supreme Court judges. The government has proposed to increase the existing number of judges in the Supreme Court from 30 to 33. As soon as the Bill is approved by Parliament, the number of judges will be increased to 33 and there will be a Chief Justice. The Supreme Court amendment bill introduced by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was introduced.

The bill comes at a time when India's Chief Justice (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the number of Supreme Court judges. The CJI had said that the lack of judges does not constitute the necessary number of Constitution Benches to decide important matters relating to the questions of law.

"Remember, three decades ago in 1988, the number of Supreme Court judges was increased from 18 to 26," the Chief Justice wrote. Two decades later, the number was increased to 31 in 2009, including the Chief Justice, to speed up disposal of cases. I request you to kindly consider it to increase the number of judges in the court on top priority so that it can function more efficiently and effectively. At present, some 60,000 cases are stuck in the Supreme Court.
