NEW DELHI: The government said on Wednesday that it would conduct demand studies for the direct assignment of spectrum to companies with net worths more than Rs 100 crore that wish to establish private captive 5G networks.
The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) issued a statement inviting entities to take part in this exercise if they are ready to establish Captive Non-Public Networks (CNPN) using spectrum obtained directly from DoT.

The Department of Telecommunication has recently introduced a section on the Saralsanchar site for conducting demand studies from businesses.

According to the telecom, "Captive non-public networks can play an important role in growing sectors by enabling secure, ultra-reliable, low latency, and high throughput communication."

The demand studies follow the lucrative 5G spectrum auction, sponsored by Reliance Jio, which netted the government more than Rs 1.5 lakh billion.

To provide the legal foundation for CNPNs, the government had released the "Guidelines for Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) licencing" on June 27.

As per the guidelines, businesses looking to establish CNPN can lease spectrum from Telecom Service Providers or directly from DoT. These guidelines also state that DoT will conduct demand analyses for direct spectrum assignments to businesses creating CNPNs.
