New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed against the SIT report giving a clean chit to then CM Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The petition was filed by Zakia Jafri. The court has dismissed Zakia's plea while upholding the sit's inquiry report. Let us know that Zakia Jafri is the wife of former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri.

A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and CT Ravikumar gave the verdict. The Supreme Court had reserved its verdict seven months ago on December 9, 2021, after completing a marathon hearing on Zakia Jafri's petition. During the Gujarat riots, Zakia Jafri's husband, Congress leader Ehsan Jafri, was killed by a rioting mob. Ehsan Jafri was killed in the Gulberg Society massacre during the Gujarat riots.

The SIT report had given a clean chit to those holding high positions in the state. The SIT had also denied any conspiracy on behalf of the state's top functionaries in instigating the Godhra train fire incident and the riots that followed. In 2017, the Gujarat High Court had dismissed Zakia's complaint against the SIT's closure report. After which Zakia reached the Supreme Court.
