Guwahati : Eviction operation was carried out by the team of Enforcement Wing, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in coordination with Assam Police on SS Road from Goenka Point near Sikh Temple to MG Road near LIC Office. GMC has arranged alternative accommodation for bonafide members of S.S. Road Hawkers Association at the Mezzanine Floor of Multistoried Building of the GMC at Fancy Bazar. Shifting the business from the S.S. Road to MezzanineFloor of the GMC building at Fancy Bazar will greatly reduce the traffic congestion in that area and serve the larger public interest. Henceforth, no vendors will be permitted to carry out vending in the 'No Vending Zone'

Earlier, a joint eviction drive was conducted by a team of Enforcement Branch, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), led by Aditya Gogoi, Municipal Secretary & i/c Collector (Enforcement Branch) in coordination with District Administration, Kamrup (M), and the commissioner of Police, Guwahati City against illegal street vendors and hawkers in the footpaths and pavements of Fancy Bazar area mainly: S.S. Road, M.S. Road, T.R.P. Road, Kedar Road, Chamber Road, etc.

Approximately 100 numbers of encroachers were evicted during the process. The evicted drive was carried out based on multiple public complaints received by GMC from time to time. It aimed mainly at clearing the traffic congestion created by the street vendors and hawkers that often cause overcrowding on footpaths and pavements and, at times, even violate social distancing norms. It may lead to further spread of Covid-19 as the Fancy Bazar area has huge potential of becoming a Covid-19 hotspot.
