Gwalior: A son could not cremate his mother due to Christian conversion in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. In fact, after the death of a woman named Saroj Devi, her Christian son David refused to perform his mother's last rites in Hindu customs. Mother Saroj Devi was a hindu. Finally, coming from a distance of 1100 km, Natin Shweta Suman cremated her grandmother and performed all the rituals.

According to media reports, son David wanted his mother's mortal remains to be buried in a cemetery according to christian practice. But, grand daughter Shweta Suman came from Jharkhand and took the body on Thursday (June 3, 2021) and performed the last rites with Hindu customs at Laxmiganj Muktidham the very next day. David, a city centre resident, used to be Dharma Pratap Singh before conversion.

Grand daughter Shweta Suman has complained to the local superintendent of police to conduct an inquiry into grandmother's death and her maternal uncle's conversion to Christianity. In the complaint, he said that his maternal uncle used to force his grandmother to convert to Christianity. Saroj Devi passed away on Wednesday, but David did not perform the last rites due to his insistence on burial. Shweta said that her grandmother did not acceptes any other religion till her death and remained a Hindu, so the last rites should be performed through eternal procedure.
