New Delhi: The extradition of wanted and fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi in the case of fleeing a bank loan of Rs 13,000 crore from India will be heard in Westminster Magistrate Court in London for the next five days from Monday. The court will hear the charges of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Nirav Modi may appear before the court through video conferencing from Wandsworth Jail in London.

The lockdown is also being followed in the United Kingdom (UK) due to the coronavirus epidemic. A team of CBI and ED officials are in constant contact with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). India is being represented by the London Court on behalf of the CPS. Indian officials could not reach London for the hearing as flights were closed.

The CBI and ED have requested the British authorities to extradite Nirav Modi to India to pursue a case in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. Nirav Modi, 49, has been lodged in Wandsworth Jail in south-west London since his arrest in March 2019. Additional allegations against Nirav Modi have also been emphasized by Indian agencies through the Crown Prosecution Service. These additional charges include intimidation of witnesses and destruction of evidence.
