Heavy security deployment in Madurai, Coimbatore for Prez visit

CHENNAI: President of India Droupadi Murmu is all  set to visit Madurai and Coimbatore on Saturday, February 18, during her maiden trip to Tamil Nadu after assuming office in July last year.

Murmu will visit the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and later arrive at Coimbatore to attend the Mahashivratri programme at Isha Yoga Centre on February 18, sources said.

Security beefed up ahead of President's visit. A 1,500-strong contingent of police will deploy security during the visit of President Droupadi Murmu in Tamil Nadu's Madurai on Friday and Coimbatore on February 19.

The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai and the Isha Yoga centre in Coimbatore have already undergone one round of inspection by the President's Special Protection Group (SPG).

On February 18, President Murmu would fly into Madurai and visit the shrine that same day. She'll go to the temple and worship there. The President would go to Coimbatore that day from the airport in Madurai to take part in the Maha Shivaratri festivities at the Isha Yoga centre there. Prior to President Murmu's visit, the SPG performed a comprehensive examination at the Coimbatore airport and the Isha Yoga centre.

During the President's temple visit, police force will cordon off the premises, and devotees will not be allowed to enter. The security of the President in Madurai would be under the control of Madurai City Police Commissioner Narendranath Nair, and in Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan.

The Union Home Ministry has received input on the President's visit from the central intelligence agencies as well.
