Bangalore: The Artakat High Court heard the loudspeaker case on mosques on November 16, 2021. Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum while hearing the matter questioned the Karnataka government as to what provision the loudspeakers were used by 16 mosques before permission and what action was being taken to ban them in view of noise pollution.

It may be mentioned that 32 residents of the Icon Apartment on Thanisendra Main Road had filed a PIL against 16 mosques over noise pollution caused by loudspeakers and mikes. Appearing for Rakesh P and others in the court, advocate Sridhar Prabhu said that the use of loudspeakers and mics cannot be allowed to run at all times. He referred to Rule 5 (3) in his petition. This rule prohibits the use of loudspeakers. It empowers the state government to approve the use of loudspeakers for some time at a religious, cultural or festival at night. But not all this for more than 15 days a year.

The lawyer said the Karnataka Wakf Board does not have the power to allow such cases as circulars are being shown that loudspeakers were installed in mosques due to this. The petition was opposed by the mosque side and said that they had sought permission from the police. According to him, loudspeakers are installed with devices that will not cause more noise than a single designated place. At the same time, loudspeakers are not played between 10 am and 6 pm.
