High Court Seeks Delhi Police Response on FIR Petition Against Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has called for a response from the Delhi Police regarding a petition demanding the registration of an FIR against former Congress President and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi. The petition alleges that Rahul Gandhi exposed the identity of a murdered Dalit girl in 2021 by sharing her father's picture with her parents on social media.

Petitioner's Argument:
Makrand Suresh Mhadlekar, the counsel for the petitioner, argued that Rahul Gandhi committed a serious crime, but Delhi Police has not yet registered an FIR against him. The petitioner contends that the Congress leader's actions had severe consequences in the case of the murdered Dalit girl.

NCPCR's Stand:
The counsel for the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asserted that there should be no exception in such cases, and the police must take action by registering an FIR. The NCPCR supports the demand for accountability in revealing the identity of a minor victim.

High Court's Response:
Acting Chief Justice Manmohan has sought a reply from the Delhi Police within 10 days. The bench, including Justice Mini Pushkarna, fixed December 21 as the date for the next hearing. The court emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a prompt response.

Social Media Platform's Role:
Advocate Tarannum Cheema, representing Rahul Gandhi, highlighted that no formal notice had been given to the Congress leader regarding the PIL. The lawyer for the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) informed the court that after the controversial post, Rahul Gandhi's account was temporarily suspended, and the post was removed. However, the petitioner's lawyer argued that the social media platform's actions were an attempt to shield Rahul Gandhi, as the post was only removed in India.

Background of the Case:
In 2021, social activist Mhadlekar had approached the High Court seeking the registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly revealing the identity of a minor Dalit girl. The 9-year-old girl died under suspicious circumstances, with her family alleging rape and murder by a priest in Nangal village, southeast Delhi.

The court's decision to seek a response from the Delhi Police reflects the gravity of the allegations against Rahul Gandhi. The case underscores the importance of protecting the identities of minor victims and holding individuals accountable for any actions that compromise their privacy and dignity. The next hearing on December 21 will likely delve deeper into the legal aspects of the matter.
