New Delhi: The apex court has refused to give an urgent hearing to a petition filed against a ban on wearing hijab in schools and colleges in Karnataka. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) N V Ramanna said the petition will be heard at an appropriate time. The court has advised the petitioners not to spread the matter on a much larger scale.  

A bench of CJI N V Ramanna asked the petitioners not to make it a national issue. The court categorically said that the petitioners should wait for the high court's verdict on the issue, where the hearing is scheduled to be held once again on Monday. The top court said it will hear the issue when the time comes. The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter, said, "We are looking at what is happening in Karnataka and the matter is sub-judice in the High Court.''

The apex court advised the petitioners to refrain from making it a national-level issue. It will be intervened by the Supreme Court at an appropriate time. The Karnataka High Court had passed an interim order on Thursday, asking it to continue the ban on hijabs in schools and colleges. With this, the court has said that it will hear the case once again on Monday. Challenging the high court's interim order, Congress leader BV Srinivas had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
