Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), November 2, 2023: Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the serene landscapes of North India, came alive on November 1 as the entire state united in exuberant celebration of 'Pahari Diwas' – a festival dedicated to the preservation and promotion of its rich traditional art and culture.

The vibrant three-day festival reached its pinnacle on Pahari Diwas, a day earmarked for honoring, cherishing, and safeguarding the cherished heritage of Himachal's hill culture.

The centerpiece of this grand celebration was the traditional folk sport known as 'Thoda,' which captivated the hearts and minds of those gathered in the state's capital, Shimla.

Thoda is a unique Indian form of archery with deep roots in Himachal Pradesh, intertwined with captivating elements of dance and melodious music. Often, it takes center stage during various local festivals, standing as a symbolic representation of the ancient epic war described in the Mahabharata.

This year's Pahari Diwas saw traditional performers from every nook and cranny of the state converging at Shimla's scenic ridge to enthrall both locals and tourists with their captivating dances, culture, and, of course, the mesmerizing Thoda demonstration.

Known predominantly in the districts of Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan, "Thoda" is more than just an archery performance – it is a grand spectacle of martial artistry. The name 'Thoda' itself derives from the circular wooden ball that replaces the traditional arrowhead in this captivating sport.

Thoda, originating from Himachal Pradesh, India, is a captivating blend of archery, dance, and music, deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the region. It is believed to have evolved as a form of martial art initially performed by the legendary Pandavas and Kauravas in the great Mahabharata.

This unique and thrilling sport isn't confined to itself but takes center stage during various local festivities, sharing the limelight with other cherished traditional games. Notably, it is the valiant Rajputs in the districts of Sirmour, Shimla, and Solan who continue to carry forward the legacy of Thoda in Himachal Pradesh.
