Himachal Pradesh Landslide blocks flow of Chenab river

A massive landslide has been reported near the Nalda village of the Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. The incident that took place on Friday has blocked the flow of the Chenab River. While no loss of life or property has been reported in the incident so far.

The water has entered four houses and the families have been shifted to safer places. Some cowsheds and cattle have also been moved to safer areas. Some villages, including Jasrath, are under threat. Although some water is now flowing out of the dam from one corner, there is a danger of bursting the dam. Sudesh Kumar Mokta, Director of Disaster Management said "River is blocked and only 10-15 percent water is discharging currently. Villages have been evacuated and a helicopter has been deployed for aerial survey."  He also informed that the deployment of the NDRF team is underway, and the local administration is taking stock of everything.

In the meantime, SP Manav Verma said, "We have requested all the Panchayat Pradhans to evacuate the people from the lower line area of nearby villages." Tribal development minister Ram Lal Markanda said, “I’m going to meet chief minister to share information with him. The landslide has blocked the flow of the Chenab river. However, now water has made its way through the debris. Hopefully, there will be no damage.”
