Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma showcased his dance moves on stage during an election campaign held at Titabor Bokahola Bagisa in Jorhat on Saturday. The campaign rally aimed to support Topon Kumar Gogoi, the BJP candidate for the Jorhat parliamentary constituency.

Sarma enthusiastically joined the crowd in clapping and dancing to the beats of a popular Jhumur song. In the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in Assam, the BJP is contesting in 11 out of the 14 seats, while its ally parties, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and UPPL, are contesting in two seats (Barpeta and Dhubri) and one seat (Kokrajhar) respectively.

Earlier, on March 27, Topon Kumar Gogoi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency in Assam, filed his nomination papers at the Jorhat district commissioner office for the first phase of the parliamentary elections, accompanied by numerous supporters.

The Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency in Assam comprises ten assembly segments, including Jorhat, Titabar, Mariani, Majuli, Teok, Sivasagar, Nazira, Demow, Sonari, and Mahmara. Assam, as a whole, has a total of 14 parliamentary constituencies. Elections for these constituencies will be held in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7.

Furthermore, the nationwide election for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will be conducted in seven phases, starting from April 19. Nearly 97 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in the general election. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on June 4.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured seven out of the 14 seats in Assam. The Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) claimed three seats each. Subsequently, during the 2019 elections, the BJP increased its seat count to nine, while the Congress maintained its three seats, and the AIUDF won a single seat.
