New Delhi: The Central government on Wednesday said in the Supreme Court that women will be allowed to participate in the National Defence Academy course and this is a historic decision. The Supreme Court was informed by the Centre while hearing a petition seeking directions to women candidates to appear for NDA and Naval Academy examinations and approve training in NDA.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told a bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in the same court that she was happy to share that the girls would be admitted to the NDA. He said, "We will submit a detailed affidavit. The examination scheduled for June 24 was postponed to November this year. Please provide the status quo in this examination, as it requires a process and structural change.''

ASG Bhati told the court that the armed services have now decided to include women in the NDA and other issues are being looked into. He has sought two weeks' time from the court to take a full stand in the case. Last month, the Supreme Court had allowed eligible women to appear for the examination scheduled for September 5 for admission to the NDA. The court also ordered the UPSC to issue a suitable notification under the order and give proper publicity to it.
