Conrad Sangma, the Meghalaya CM will go to New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the proscribed terrorist group HNLC's offer of peace talks with the Centre. On Tuesday, Conrad Sangma will meet with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to discuss the next steps in the HNLC peace offer.

"I'll meet with MHA officials to advise them on the latest developments and discuss how to move this (peace process) ahead." "Once we have MHA's approval, we'll move on," Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated. 

The HNLC's general secretary, Saikupar Nongtraw, made a statement announcing the organization's determination to participate in peace talks. "After hearing several appeals from elders and social groups in the last few days, we (the HNLC) have decided to give peace another opportunity," Nongtraw stated.

"At this time, we are willing to talk within the framework of the Indian constitution and without any preconditions," the HNLC head stated.  The outlawed group has been striving for a sovereign homeland for Meghalaya's native Khasi people. Nongtraw stated that they will continue to safeguard the jaidbynriew (indigenous Khasi) population's rights.

Last year's 'assassination' of former general secretary Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, according to the HNLC leader, halted the peace effort. Nongtraw said that Thangkhiew supported the peace discussions and that he was given the duty of promoting the peace effort with New Delhi.

"As several elders have informed us," the HNLC leader stated, "the peace discussions would give an ideal chance for the government to improve peace in the region."
