New Delhi:  In New Delhi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) event on Human Rights Day, emphasizing the need to "empower not pockets but human minds" and criticizing the "mad race" for political freebies. During the event at Bharat Mandapam, marking the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Dhankhar highlighted India's prosperity in human rights and urged a healthy national debate on the economic impact of fiscal patronage and freebies.

UN Resident Coordinator in India Shombi Sharp, reading a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, joined Dhankhar on the dais. The vice-president expressed appreciation for the "revolutionary changes" promoting human rights in India, attributing it to the country's civilizational ethos and constitutional framework.

Dhankhar emphasized the importance of human empowerment over fiscal patronage and criticized the distortion of expenditure priorities caused by political freebies. He called for a debate on the economic implications of such practices, urging the NHRC to produce an informative paper for public enlightenment. Dhankhar underscored that human rights thrive when minds and resources are empowered, rather than pockets.

The vice-president declared the new norm in the country as "no one is above the law," acknowledging a paradigm shift towards accountability. He stressed the inalienable facet of promoting human rights and hailed transparency and accountable governance as game-changers for the cause.
