After the birth of a child, parents are often worried about their height. Many parents in India make their children do hanging exercises to make them taller. However, some people do not grow as tall as expected, due to which they have to face many problems. Especially, getting rejected for marriage can be a big issue.

Average height in India and the growing popularity of surgery

According to a report in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, the average height of Indian men is 1.64 meters (5 feet 4.9 inches) and the average height of women is 1.52 meters (5 feet 0.05 inches). To increase height, people are now resorting to limb lengthening surgery, which is a growing trend.

What is limb lengthening surgery?

Dr. Hemant Bansal, Orthopaedic Consultant at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram, explains that limb lengthening surgery is done to increase height. This surgery is for those people whose height is short due to injury, lack of any organ from birth or genetic reasons. Now people with short height have also started opting for this surgery.

Surgery Procedure

During surgery, the bones of the foot are usually cut. A special device called an external fixator is then used to gradually create tension between the two parts of the bone. During this process, new bone is formed between the bones, which is called osteogenesis. It may take several months for the bone to heal and strengthen. After surgery, regular physical therapy and follow-up are required.

How much difference can there be in length?

Limb lengthening surgery usually increases the length by 5 to 8 centimeters (about 2 to 3 inches). In some cases, there is a possibility of increasing the length even more than this. The purpose of this surgery is not only to increase the height but also to correct the disparity between the body parts.

Expenses and risks

The cost of this surgery is at least Rs 2 lakh. It is an expensive process, and if surgery is required again, it can take up to a year. There are some risks during and after surgery, such as infection, bone failure, damage to muscles and nerves. After surgery, patients may face pain, numbness, weakness and muscle stiffness. To avoid these problems, regular physiotherapy, cleaning of equipment and keeping in touch with the doctor is necessary. Limb lengthening surgery can be an option to increase height, but both its benefits and risks should be considered before adopting it. This surgery is for those people who are struggling with physical and social pressure and want to increase their height.
