In Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district, a CRPF assistant sub-inspector allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle, according to authorities.

According to Gariaband's Additional Superintendent of Police Chandresh Singh Thakur, ASI Udayvir Singh of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) battalion took the extreme step on Wednesday afternoon at the paramilitary's camp in Darripara village within the Bindranawagarh police station limits.

Singh's coworkers hurried to the scene after hearing the gunshot and discovered him lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the official. Singh was from Uttar Pradesh, he said, adding that an investigation is underway to determine what drove him to take such drastic measures.

The CRPF has been deployed in Gariaband district, around 90 kilometres from Raipur, for anti-Naxal operations.
