New Delhi: There will be no longer a weekly holiday for school students in the Muslim-dominated Union Territory of Lakshadweep on Friday. The Lakshadweep Education Department has released a new calendar declaring Friday as a working day and Sunday as a holiday for schools here. The decision has put an end to the decades-old privilege of students on religious grounds.

Lakshadweep MP Mohammad Faisal said that nearly six decades ago when schools were open for students to education, Fridays were full holidays and Saturdays were half-day off. He said the decision has been taken without discussing it with anybody of schools, District Panchayat, or local MP. Lakshadweep District Panchayat Vice President and Counsellor PP Abbas has written to the advisor to Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel asking him to reconsider the decision.

Official sources said the administration has revised school time and regular school activities to ensure "optimum utilization of resources and necessary planning of learning process.''
