India and Vietnam strengthen strategic partnership with new agreements

India and Vietnam have deepened their strategic ties, reaffirming their shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region. During a recent meeting at Hyderabad House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Vietnam’s crucial role in India's Act East Policy and its alignment with India's goals in the Indo-Pacific. Modi stated, "We support evolution, not expansionism," underlining their common perspective on regional issues.

In his remarks, PM Modi expressed condolences for the passing of Vietnam’s General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, praising his role in strengthening the bilateral relationship. "Under his leadership, our ties gained strategic direction," Modi noted. He warmly welcomed Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his delegation.

The leaders discussed the impressive growth in bilateral trade, which has surged by 85% over the past decade. They highlighted advancements in various sectors, including defense, technology, and energy. Both leaders also reviewed their future goals, aligning India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision with Vietnam’s 2045 aspirations. They agreed to enhance cooperation in defense and security.

PM Modi emphasized the urgency of finalizing the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, stating, "This will help realize our mutual trade potential." Additionally, the two nations agreed on a $300 million credit line to boost Vietnam’s maritime security and prioritized collaboration in counter-terrorism and cyber security.

During his visit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh honored Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, reflecting on his lasting ideals. The Vietnamese leader was given a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, including a Guard of Honour, highlighting the strengthening bonds between India and Vietnam.
