New Delhi: Southwest monsoon activity has now shifted northwards after heavy rains in western Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka last week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in at least 15 states till August 1. IMD said the torrential rains in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh will continue till Friday, after which it is expected to subside. There have also been reports of landslides from these hill states during this week.

The MET department has said that heavy rain (more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours) has been sounded at various places in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh today. Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours). These northern states are currently under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over northern Pakistan and adjoining Punjab. IMD said rain is also likely to increase in eastern and central India areas by August 1.

The low-pressure system currently located over West Bengal will cause rain in Bihar and Jharkhand in the next two days. West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand are likely to receive widespread heavy rainfall (64.5 to 115.5 mm in 24 hours) by Friday. Rain will continue to occur in eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Saturday. Western Madhya Pradesh and adjoining eastern Rajasthan are expected to receive heavy rain in the next two days.
