India to preside over UNSC for the first time, emphasizes on eliminating terrorism

New Delhi: August 1, 2021, will be a proud day for India. The country is scheduled to lead the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the first time. India will host maritime security, peace and counter-terrorism programmes. In a video message, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador TS Tirumurthy said that it is an honour for us to lead the Security Council. The month we will celebrate our 75th Independence Day.

The first day of India's chairmanship in UNSC will be held on August 2. When TS Tirumurthy will hold a press conference at the United Nations Headquarters on the council's programmes. Some people will be there. Others can connect through video conferences. According to the unreleased programme, Tirumurthy will also provide details to member countries that are not members of the Council. India's tenure as a temporary member of the Security Council began on January 1, 2021. It will now be the first chairmanship of the country for the 2021-22 term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

India will again lead the council in December next year. Ambassador Tirumurthy said sea security is India's priority. The Security Council needs to take a stand on this issue also. We have a long partnership in peacekeeping, he added. He further said that they will focus on ensuring security.
