The Indian Air Force (IAF) has inaugurated a Weapon Systems School (WSS) at Air Force Station Begumpet in Hyderabad. This new school aims to recalibrate and transform the IAF into a force ready for the future. The inauguration ceremony was led by IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari.

The establishment of this training school marks a significant milestone for the IAF. According to officials, the WSS represents a "gigantic leap" forward for the armed forces, particularly for the Air Force. This initiative follows the approval of the Weapon System (WS) branch, a new branch of officers in the IAF, in 2022.

The WSS will offer contemporary, effect-based training to prepare officers of the newly formed WS branch in line with IAF requirements. Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari emphasized that this new branch will unite operators of ground-based and specialist weapon systems under one umbrella, significantly enhancing the IAF's warfighting capabilities.

The WS branch includes four streams:

  1. Flying stream: Operates weapons and systems on airborne platforms like the Sukhoi-30 MKI and C-130J.
  2. Remote stream: Operates remotely piloted aircraft.
  3. Mission commanders and operators: Manages surface-to-air and surface-to-surface weapon systems.
  4. Intelligence stream: Handles space-based intelligence and imagery.

Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari highlighted the critical role of the instructors as pioneers of this newly formed branch. He encouraged them to uphold the envisioned training regime and deliver decisive air power. He also commended the founding members of the WSS and urged all personnel to establish the school as a nodal center for weapon systems training in India.

The creation of the WS branch was initially announced during the Air Force Day Parade celebrations on October 8, 2022.
