NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Thursday that India's 'bio economy' has risen eight times in the last eight years, to USD 80 billion from USD 10 billion and that the country is not far from joining the top ten countries in the global biotech ecosystem.

The Prime Minister, speaking at the Biotech Startup Expo after inaugurating the two-day event in New Delhi, said the number of start-ups in the country has expanded from a few hundreds to over 70,000 in the last eight years.

These 70,000 start-ups are spread over 60 different industries, PM Modi remarked. The world's trust in the skill and ingenuity of our IT experts has reached a new high,  the Prime Minister added.

Biotech Startup Expo 2022 aims to strengthen the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' movement in the biotech sector.
The Expo will act as a channel to connect entrepreneurs, investors, industry executives, scientists, researchers, bio-incubators, manufacturers, regulators, and government officials.

The Expo will feature around 300 exhibits showcasing biotechnology applications in various disciplines, including healthcare, genomics, biopharma, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, waste-to-value, and renewable energy, among others.
