The day of August 15 is recorded in golden letters in Indian history. On this day, India got independence from British slavery 7 decades ago. Every Indian was dreaming of this day at that time. - India attained independence on 15 August 1947. Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, selected this date for India's independence.

- On August 15, along with India, three other countries also celebrate their Independence Day. South Korea was liberated from Japan on August 15, 1945. Bahrain gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1971 and a country called Congo on August 15, 1960 got independence from France.

- On 15 August 1519, a city called Panama was created.

- Three years after India's independence i.e. on 15 August 1950, there was a severe earthquake in Assam. It is said that during this time around 3000 people had to lose their lives.

- Maharishi Aurobindo Ghosh, who was involved in getting India independence from the British, was born on the same date of August 15, 1872.

- The first passenger train was run by East India Railway from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Hooghly, the day the train ran was 15 August 1854. Official train operations started from 1855.

- The decision was taken by the East India Company to set up separate civil and criminal courts in different districts of India. This decision was taken on 15 August 1772.
