DHARAMSALA: Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of Punjab Kings, said that his choice to give left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar the final over in their IPL 2023 match against Delhi Capitals backfired while also criticising the performance of his fast bowlers during the power play.
Due to the ineffectiveness of his fast bowlers, Dhawan had to hand Brar the ball for the final three of his five overs, with Ellis bowling the other two. The plan failed in the final two overs as Delhi reached 213/2, with Rilee Rossouw leading the way with 82 not out off 37 balls. Ellis was hammered for 18 runs and Brar handed away 23 runs.
"My choice to bowl Brar, a spinner, in the final over failed. There, the momentum moved. My fast bowler (Ellis) had previously given up 18 runs. After the game, Dhawan addressed the media and said, "Those two overs cost us the game.
In the first six overs, we didn't bowl particularly well. Due to the pitch's ability to offer swing, we ought to have got some wickets there, he continued.
At the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, the opening pair of Delhi, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, reached 61/0 before putting up a 93-run opening stand. Punjab's fast bowlers, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Nathan Ellis, were unable to stop them.
"Our bowlers should have pitched the ball up, but they didn't. This was the strategy. Unluckily, they were unable to put it into action. Whether or whether we take wickets is a different matter. "But we should bowl in the right areas, which we haven't been doing for a while, and that's hurting us because in powerplay we always give 50–60 runs," said the bowler. And that's fantastic, but we should also be getting wickets," said Dhawan as Punjab were about to be booted out of the IPL 2023.
