NEW DELHI: Global road safety body International Road Federation (IRF) has called for the authorities to take remedial actions to remove black spots on highways across the country to prevent accidents.
The Road Federation body has expressed deep concern on the demise of an eminent businessman Cyrus Mistry in a road crash near Mumbai on Sunday.
"We urge the state governments to use every means at their disposal to reform the culture surrounding road safety while establishing unambiguous standards. The main causes of the rise in road fatalities in the nation, according to international organisations working in road safety, are a lack of policies and enforcement. said Satish Parakh, president of the India Chapter of the International Road Federation (IRF).
India is a signatory to the UN's Decade of Action Plan for Global Road Safety, which intends to cut down on traffic fatalities by 50% by 2030.
ITF also expresses concern over vehicle safety in addition to road engineering because, although being a costly SUV, it failed to save the passengers. According to Parakh, the five "E's" of road safety are education, engineering of roads and vehicles, enforcement, and emergency treatment.
"India accounts for more than 11% of all traffic-related fatalities worldwide, with 426 people dying each day and 18 per hour. In 2021, over 1.6 lakh people died in road accidents, the majority of which might have been prevented. We mourn Cyrus Mistry's premature passing. But would also like to bring the rising number of deadly traffic accidents in the nation to the attention of the Union and state governments," said K.K. Kapila, President Emeritus, IRF.
We urge the central government and the various state governments to address the deadly accident hotspots that exist across the nation. These accident hotspots, or "black areas," where accidents repeatedly happen, can be fixed, said Kapila.
