Jallikattu game starts in Tamil Nadu with guidelines due to coronavirus

Chennai: Jallikattu games have begun at Avnipuram in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. More than 200 bulls are participating in the competition. In view of Covid-19, the state government has directed that the number of sportspersons in a programme should not be more than 150. The number of spectators should not exceed 50% of the house.

Many people are badly injured in this bloody game every year, so many lives are also lost. In the year 2019, a spectator was killed due to a heart attack during Jallikattu held in various parts of the state at the Pongal Festival which began at the same time. In addition, more than 40 persons who controlled the bullocks were injured. A total of 729 bullocks were used at that moment.

Tourists from abroad also came to see the festival. About 1500 policemen were maintaining vigilance. For the first time, a team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police was also deployed at the venue. Tamil Nadu Minister R P Udaikumar inaugurated the function. Lakhs of rupees were rewarded to the owners of the bullocks and the winning bullocks.
