NEW DELHI: Proposal for One-Third Seat Reservation for Women in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Debuted in Lok Sabha. A majjor  move towards enhancing gender representation in the legislative framework, the Lok Sabha witnessed the introduction of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023 on Tuesday. The proposed bill aims to earmark one-third of the assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir for women.

Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, presented the bill in the House with the objective of fostering increased participation and representation of women in the law-making processes within the Jammu and Kashmir assembly.

This legislative proposal comes subsequent to the enactment of the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act, 2023 by the Parliament. The act aimed to facilitate the reservation of one-third of the total seats for women in various legislative bodies, including the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and the Delhi assembly.

The essence of the bill revolves around amending the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 to instate similar provisions in the region, ensuring equal and equitable representation of women in the assembly.

However, amid the bill's debut, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy highlighted that elections for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly have not been scheduled yet. He emphasized that there seems to be no immediate urgency in introducing the bill at this point in time.

The introduction of such a bill signals a stride towards gender inclusivity and empowerment within the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. If passed, this legislation could significantly alter the state's political representation, fostering a more diverse and inclusive governance structure.
