Kangana has been facing severe criticism for her statement. Lyricist Javed Akhtar has now reacted to Kangana Ranaut's statement.

Why would those who had nothing to do with the freedom movement feel bad if someone (one) calls our freedom just a 'begging'?'' However, many Bollywood people, as well as political leaders, have hit out at Kangana for her remarks. A police complaint has also been lodged against the actress. Speaking about it to a well-known website, Kangana said, "Congress is an extension of British rule and India achieved 'real freedom' after Narendra Modi was elected prime minister in 2014.

On the other hand, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal urged President Ram Nath Kovind to withdraw Kangana's Padma Shri. In fact, she said, "The actress' statements reflect her hatred for our great freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and countless others who laid down their lives for the nation! We all know that the sacrifice and martyrdom of our great freedom fighters gave our country freedom from British rule''.
