Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tributes to socialist icon Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, saying that he had a remarkable personality that "left an inedible mark on India's history and India is proud that legends like him were born in this land.

Sharing concern on Twitter handle, the Prime Minister noted: "Tributes to Loknayak JP on his Jayanti. He was a remarkable personality, who left an inedible mark on India's history. He devoted himself to public welfare initiatives and was at the forefront of protecting India's democratic ethos. We are deeply inspired by his ideals,"  The PM went on to say that The 'Loknayak' was one of the prominent faces of the Quit India Movement and he is remembered for leading the mid-1970s opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, for whose overthrow he had called for a "total revolution".

Jayaprakash Narayan was a renowned freedom fighter and one of the most respected political leaders of independent India. He was known for his outstanding leadership which inspired modern India. He will always be remembered for leading the Opposition to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's policies in the mid-1970s. Born on 11 October 1902, Jayaprakash Narayan, was the fourth child of his parents Harsu Dayal Srivastava and Phul Rani Devi. He and his family resided in the Saran district's Sitab Diara which is nearly 118 km from Patna and came from the Kayastha community.
