The National Testing Agency's (NTA) online examination system for admission to JEE (Main) has come under fire after the CBI detained seven members of a commercial consultancy business for charging up to Rs 15 lakh per candidate to assist admissions to elite engineering institutions.

In connection with the suspected irregularities in the JEE mains exam, a CBI court has detained Affinity Education Directors Siddharth Krishna and Vishambar Mani Tripathi, as well as its employee Hritik Singh, till September 9. The remaining detainees will be brought before a magistrate at a later date. According to a CBI officer, the investigation agency is probing into the records of applicants who used the Affinity education consultant firm's services and sat in NTA examinations for top engineering institutions.

"The CBI has seized the documents and is investigating into the consultancy's bank account information in order to find out who else is engaged in the scam. NTA is also providing us with information on additional questionable exam centers. Sources also informed that the modus operandi adopted by the accused persons was that "they arranged a solver sitting at a remote location for solving the questions which were displayed on the computer terminal allotted to the candidate at the examination centre in connivance with the Centre's authorities."
