Ranchi: The three-day first session of the newly elected Fifth Assembly of Jharkhand has started from today and on the first day, Acting Assembly Speaker Stephen Marandi administered the oath to a total of 78 members including the CM in the 81-member assembly. Marandi administered the oath to the 78 members present in the House one by one, with three of the BJP members taking oath in Sanskrit.

Marandi first administered oath to Hemant Soren, CM and Leader of the House. After this, three cabinet colleagues Rameshwar Oraon of Congress, Alamgir Alam and Satyanand Bhokta of RJD were sworn in. CM Hemant Soren was sworn in from Barhet constituency. He informed the assembly speaker in writing that he was leaving Dumka, the second assembly seat he had won. Hemant Soren contested the 2014 and 2019 assembly elections from both Barhet and Dumka seats, where he lost to BJP's Lewis Marandi in Dumka seat in 2014, while he won both times from Barhet.

Sameer Kumar Mahanti of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) from Bahragowda seat was not present in the House today, so he could not take oath. Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu has already administered oath to Marandi on 31 December. After the swearing-in, a new assembly speaker will be elected on January 7, for which nomination papers have been filed at 12 noon today.
