Srinagar: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing of Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday arrested six people, including separatist leader Zafar Akbar Bhat and a woman from Baramulla in north Kashmir. A case has been registered against them for selling professional course seats including MBBS in Pakistan. It is also alleged that the money received from children was used for terror funding.

CIK has identified the arrested persons as Mohammad Akbar Bhat and others. CIK said two accused against whom there is sufficient evidence are evading arrest and both will be arrested soon. The latest case involves two accused who moved to Pakistan in the early 1990s for training in illegal weapons and ammunition and settled there. It was helped by ISI. People associated with the Hurriyat in India have been arrested in the case, who was involved in funding terrorism and extremist-related activities.

CIK said they were identified with the help of reliable sources at the Srinagar police station. Many of them were selling seats for admission to MBBS and other professional courses in the college. A criminal investigation was initiated in the case registered last year. During the investigation, it was revealed that in many cases seats related to MBBS and other professional degrees were given to students who were close family members or relatives of the slain terrorists. According to the agency, there were cases where seats were sold to parents of students desirous of getting quotas MBBS and other professional degrees in one way or the other allotted to different Hurriyat leaders.
