New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana has recommended the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit for the next CJI. In this regard, CJI Ramana has also given a letter of recommendation to the Law and Justice Minister. If Justice UU Lalit's name is stamped, he will become the 49th CJI of the country. Let us know that CJI NV Ramana is going to retire on August 26. Earlier, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had written to CJI NV Ramana urging him to recommend the name of his successor. Rijiju's letter dated August 3 was received by the CJI office late in the evening.

According to tradition, about a month before his retirement, the CJI conveys the recommendation of his successor's name to the President through the Ministry of Law and Justice in a closed envelope. Usually, the name of the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, i.e., number two in the order of seniority, is in the envelope. Traditionally, judges of the apex court take charge as CJI based on their seniority. There is no fixed term for CJI. The retirement age of judges in the apex court has been fixed at 65 years under the Constitution.

Meanwhile, after many decades in the Supreme Court, there is going to be an occasion when the country will see three Chief Justices within four months. From July this year to November, along with CJI NV Ramana, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud are also set to become CJIs. Five years after this interesting coincidence, in 2027, the country will witness a similar coincidence. In 2027, three CJIs will come and go in the two months between September and October.

In 2027, there will be a similar phenomenon:-

As per the records, tradition and practice of the Supreme Court, justice Vikram Nath will retire as CJI on September 27 in 2027 and the country will get the first woman CJI. Justice BV Nagarathna will become the CJI of the country for 35 days. Justice PS Narasimha will then take over as chief justice of India for six months and three days with effect from October 31, 2027.

This happened in 1950 as well:

Let me tell you that by 2027, this will be the third time that 3 CJIs will be made in such a short time. In fact, the Supreme Court came into existence in 1950 and after that, the first to become three different Chief Justices of India in the country between November and December 1991. Then CJI Ranganath Mishra retired on November 24, 1991. After this, Justice Kamal Narayan Singh became the CJI from November 25 to December 12, i.e. for a total of 18 days. Later, Justice MH Kania assumed the post and served as the Chief Justice of India for 11 months from December 13, 1991, to November 17, 1992.
