Bhopal: In the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, the Congress had made illegal sand mining an issue. More than eight months have passed since the Congress government was formed in the province, yet illegal mining continues unabated. While Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha has raised questions over illegal mining, state government minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has raised questions about illegal mining. Govind Singh has admitted that his government has so far failed to curb illegal mining.

Illegal mining is taking place in several rivers including Narmada river, Ken river, Betwa, Kali Sindh in the state and the process of breaking the mountains is also continuing. This round has not started today but has been going on for years. Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Vivek Tankha tweeted concern over illegal mining. He wrote, "The operation of the mines requires transparency. 80 percent of the ballast mines are in the grip of politicians. Royalty theft is a common practice. Just as the Narmada and other rivers have been exploited in the last 15 years, it is a symbol of public shame."

On the other hand, the Kamal Nath government's co-operative minister, Dr. Govind Singh has also admitted that his government has failed to stop illegal mining. "For the past 15 years, we have fought against illegal mining, but eight months after our government came, we have not been able to do anything in this matter," Dr. Singh said. Singh has also apologized for the government's failure. His remarks came after MP Tankha's tweet.
