BANGALORE: On the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava Day, the Karnataka government has issued a notification directing the implementation of an improved 17% reservation for the Scheduled Castes and a 7% reservation for the Scheduled Tribes beginning on Tuesday.

The bureaucrats, however, claimed that the notification sent for the implementation was unclear. They added that the ambiguities must first be resolved.

According to the announcement, the enhancement of reservations must follow the instructions starting on November 1. However, the senior bureaucrats predicted that after the improved reservation is put into place, the state's overall reservation rate will increase to 56%.

They said that the implementation of the enhancement of reservations was difficult since the roasters needed to be updated and because of regulatory requirements. The Social Welfare Department has published a notification and provided guidelines for the state government's implementation of the ordinance.

The Secretary of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), the Chief Executive Officer of the Karnataka Examination Authority, and the heads of all departments, universities, academic institutions, corporations, boards, commissions, and government agencies had all received the notification (KEA).

According to the ordinance issued by the governing BJP administration, the higher reservation would also apply to colleges and schools that are supported by the government, as well as to student admissions.

All government projects as well as businesses and public institutions that are registered under the Karnataka Cooperative Societies Act must abide by the regulation.

The debate over increasing SC and ST reservations in Karnataka has moved into the political realm. The decision to increase reservations for SCs and STs has been contested by the government BJP and the opposition Congress.
In advance of the 2023 Assembly elections, which are set to take place in less than six months, both parties hope to capitalise on it politically.
