SRINAGAR: An uneducated Kashmiri Sufi poet who writes poems in a unique coded language get recognition. Zarifa Jan is a special Sufi poetess from the Kashmir Valley who writes her poems using a special coded language.

Zarifa, 65, said that she began writing poetry in her late 30s after experiencing a state of disorientation and trance while fetching water from a nearby canal. She also misplaced her water jug and started to feel totally weird.

During this period of unconsciousness, she spontaneously uttered a few sentences. In fact, this marked Zarifa's poetic debut.

Zarifa, who hails from the Bandipora district of North Kashmir, says that her late daughter originally used to keep her poetry in written form, but that this medium was removed from her after her passing.

"Everything seemed to have been snatched away from me. I won't ever forget the surprise." It took Zarifa a long time to realise that she was creating poetry, said Zarifa. She began keeping them in the shape of a few circles since she was unable to read and write.

Thus,  she became the originator of the unique coded language that no one else could understand.

"I don't know where this concept came from, but after looking at these circles put on the paper, I get what I wrote," the author said. "I can't believe that despite being uneducated, my mother is not only composing such amazing poetry, but has also become the founder of a specific coding language to preserve her poetry," said Zarifa's son Shafaat. Shafaat continued by saying that he wants to publish his mother's poems in a book so that everyone can read it and not only her.
