Keralites consume liquor of Rs 150 crore during Christmas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: According to numbers released by the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, liquor worth Rs 150.38 crore was sold on Christmas (December 24 and 25) in Kerala (BEVCO).

BEVCO is in charge of the state's retail sales of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer. According to the Corporation, BEVCO stores sold Rs 65.88 worth of liquor and beer on Christmas Eve (December 24), while Kerala State Cooperatives Consumers' Federation (Consumerfed) outlets sold Rs 11.5 crore. The next day, BEVCO reported sales of Rs 65 crore, while Consumerfed reported sales of Rs 8 crore.

On December 24, a BEVCO outlet on Power House Road in the heart of the state capital city sold a record Rs 73 lakhs worth of whiskey. According to a previous survey, about 32.9 lakh persons out of the state's 3.34 crore population drink alcohol, including 29.8 lakh men and 3.1 lakh women.

Kerala has a population of about 5 lakh people that consume alcohol on a regular basis. According to state government figures, 83,851 people, including 1,043 women, are addicted to alcohol.
