Guwahati: For the first time in the history of Assam, a woman finance minister is set to present the budget in the state assembly. The budget session of the Assam Assembly begins on July 12. Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog is scheduled to present the state budget for the financial year 2021-22 on July 16. This will be the first budget after the formation of the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in the state.

Ajanta Neog served as a minister in the Tarun Gogoi (Tarun Gogoi) led Congress government from 2001 to 2016. He left the Congress last year and joined the BJP on December 29. Ajanta Neog, who has been elected MLA for five consecutive terms, had won the last assembly election from the Golaghat seat. She defeated his nearest rival Bitupan Sekai of the Congress by 9,325 votes. On May 11, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over the command of the Finance Ministry to Ajanta Neog. At the same time, she became the first woman Finance Minister of Assam to make her name in history.

Let us inform you that apart from the Finance Department, Ajanta Neog also has the charge of the Social Welfare Department. Ajanta Neog's husband Nagen Neog was a former Congress leader. Nagen Neog and eight others lost their lives in the 1996 United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) attack.
