New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit has recommended the name of senior-most Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor to the Central government. CJI Lalit has submitted a copy of his letter to Justice Chandrachud. The government had sent a letter to the CJI on October 7 asking him to recommend the name of his successor. Justice Chandrachud will be the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9. CJI Lalit will retire a day before this.

Justice Chandrachud became a judge of the apex court on May 13, 2016. He is the son of the country's longest-serving CJI Justice YV Chandrachud. His father held the top post of the judiciary from February 22, 1978, to July 11, 1985. Justice Chandrachud will have a tenure of two years and will retire on November 10, 2024. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.

Justice Chandrachud was earlier the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He was a judge of the Bombay High Court till March 29, 2000, when appointed to the post. The Bombay High Court posted Justice Chandrachud as a senior advocate in June 1998 and he was appointed additional solicitor general the same year.
