Kolkata: West Bengal Housing Corporation had allotted 2 acres of land to former Team India cricketer Sourav Ganguly a few years ago to set up an educational institution. Now, in view of the same land, the Calcutta High Court has imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees on Ganguly and a fine of Rs. 50,000 each on the Bengal government and its housing corporation. It is alleged that the land was given to Sourav without tender and at a low price.

According to the report, the land has already been surrendered by Sourav, but the court has still imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WHIDCO) and the state government for arbitrary use of power. Sourav has been charged a token cost of 10,000 rupees. The court found that the land was wrongly allotted. A bench of acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee expressed displeasure over the conduct of the housing corporation during the allotted process.

The court said Ganguly seems to have been able to fix the conditions, yet the land was allotted as if it were a private company, not a state property, which was allowed to deal with its assets in its own way, without any legal process. The court said Ganguly should have acted as per law. The court reiterated that if Sourav was interested in the development of sports, especially cricket, he could have joined several active sports establishments to inspire budding cricketers. The court said the country always stands for players. Especially those who make the country proud internationally. It is true that Sourav Ganguly has raised the country's name in cricket, but when it comes to law and rules, everything is equal in the eyes of the Constitution. No one can claim to be above that.
