HYDERABAD: Telangana Industry Minister K T. Rama Rao urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to intervene and save the weavers by cancelling plans to raise the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on handloom and textiles.

On National Handloom Day, the Minister reminded the Prime Minister of his desire to strengthen the handloom sector. Increased GST on handlooms and textiles, according to Rama Rao, will be a death knell for the industry.

"Honourable Narendra Modi Ji, on the National Handloom Day you had talked of strengthening Vocal4Handmade. Contrary to the idea, your govt has enhanced GST on handlooms and textiles from 5 to 12-pc which will be a death knell for the industry. Solicit you to intervene and save weavers," KTR said in tweet.

KTR had addressed a letter to Union Textile Minister Piyush Goyal on December 19, urging him to abandon plans to raise GST from January 1, 2022. KTR said that the textiles, particularly the handlooms sector, has been suffering for the past two years as a result of the impact of Covid-19, and that increasing the GST from the existing 5 percent to 12 percent  would be a death blow to the business.
