BOGOTA: Local authorities confirmed that at least 14 people were killed and 30 others were injured in a landslide in the town of Dosquebradas in the western Colombian department of Risaralda.
On Tuesday, Alvaro Arias, the Secretary of Government of Pereira, the department's capital city, said, "There are 14 people dead, including two minors, and more than 30 people injured, some critically." The official also stated that several people were still missing following the landslide, which occurred early Tuesday morning, according to reports.
Heavy rains in the last few days prompted the landslide, which destroyed properties along its path, according to Governor Victor Manuel Tamayo of Risaralda. Due to the potential of future landslides, Tamayo added, "an evacuation and relocation process must be carried out."
At the incident scene, search and rescue teams from the Police Department, Civil Defense, Army, Fire Department, and the State Office for Disaster Risk Management, among others, were there.
